Background

Amid the deepening global energy transition, summarizing and disseminating the operational experience of power systems in representative countries carries significant practical value for enhancing the safety, cleanliness, and economic efficiency of power systems worldwide. Costa Rica stands as a pioneer of clean development in Latin America, with its power system maintaining a near-100% share of renewable energy generation over a long period. As a key member of the Central American Electrical Interconnection System (SIEPAC), it has accumulated extensive practical experience in areas such as efficient system dispatch, stable operation, and electricity market development, offering strong reference value and important lessons.

This training program aims to systematically review Costa Rica's experience in building and operating a high-renewable power system and electricity market, providing insights and references for the low-carbon transition of power systems and the development of regional electricity markets in Latin America and other developing regions.
