《Development and Prospects of
Grid-Forming Technologies》

With the accelerated transformation of the global energy structure, the form of the power system is undergoing profound changes. The traditional power system dominated by synchronous generators is rapidly evolving towards a high proportion of new energy and a high proportion of power electronics, known as the "dual high" direction. Currently, new energy and energy storage are mostly connected to the grid in the form of grid-connected converters, which have low immunity and weak support. After large-scale access, the strength of the power system decreases, increasing the risk of safe and stable operation. In this context, the grid-forming technology is expected to become the key supporting technology for the construction of new power systems in the future, because it can enable power electronic equipment to have system support capabilities similar to traditional synchronous generators.
To promote the development and innovative application of grid-forming technologies globally, the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization has released a research report titled Development and Prospects of Grid-Forming Technologies. This report provides a comprehensive summary and analysis of grid-forming technologies for the first time, outlining the current development status, technical characteristics, and system functions of grid-forming technologies. It also investigates global standards and typical application cases related to grid-forming technologies, and offers prospects for the challenges, application scenarios, and development paths of grid-forming technologies in the future.
